Point-and-Click adventure Ron Gilbert might not be working on Monkey Island or Maniac Mansion anymore, but he’s back in the business of making us laugh with a brand new IP. He’s been working with former Lucasarts coworker Tim Schaffer at Double Fine Productions, and his upcoming game looks like something really special.
The Cave stars seven individuals diving deeper and deeper into the maw of an ancient cave, a place where adventurers have been traveling for millenniums, all looking for something to complete their lives. A Hillbilly looking for his lost love. A scientist on the verge of a huge discovery. A monk who seeks enlightenment. Each of these characters will bring their unique gifts into the depths and can complete the journey each in their own separate ways.
How do we know all this?
Well, the Cave himself told us. In his latest trailer, the titular character narrates his own story in of how many adventures have tried and failed to uncover his secrets. He’s become a little cocky over the last 10,000 years, so it would be nice to show him up.
The Cave invokes Ron Gilbert’s original approach to Maniac Mansion in that there is a single quest to be completed, but it can be completed a large number of ways depending on which cast member you decide to take the plunge with.
SEGA will be publishing The Cave on the Wii U, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC in January 2013. Happy digging!
