Of all the ridiculous RPGs in the world, none have captured the indie spirit on the internet more than Barkley Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden. Once just a fun little RPG Maker 2003 game, it became a minor phenomenon when it slammed onto the internet after reaching a wider audience.
Of course, it’s mostly thanks to its ludicrous storyline. Basketball has been outlawed in the future thanks to superstar Charles Barkley performing a Chaos Dunk, killing most of the game’s spectators. Twelve years after this accident, another Chaos Dunk wipes out Manhattan. The police force, led by Michael Jordan, sets out to arrest Barkley for questioning. His escape from the law leads him to the notorious B.L.O.O.D.M.O.S.E.S. terrorist group which is dedicated to wiping out the world with the perfect dunk.
The cliffhanger ending has left fans clamoring for a follow up for years now, and developers Tales of Game’s Studio promised that a Kickstarter would be appearing soon.
Well, it’s been up for a single day and Tales of Game’s Studio has already raised their $35,000 dollar mark.
The Magical Realms of Tír na nÓg: Escape from Necron 7 – Revenge of Cuchulainn: The Official Game of the Movie – Chapter 2 of the Hoopz Barkley SaGa, or just Barkley 2 from here on out, will change up the pace a little bit from its predecessor. The traditional JRPG style battle system will be scrapped for a more action oriented style, and it will even feature a randomized weapon system similar to Borderlands.
As with most Kickstarter campaigns, there are plenty of goodies and rewards to be found. A $60 donation lands every game that Tales of Game’s Studio has ever made. No stretch goals have been announced yet, but with 29 days left, I think you can expect them.
