The iPhone 5 is, so far, the most searched term for news stories on Bing this year. It’s more popular than the 2012 U.S. Presidential Election, the 2012 Olympics, Hurricane Sandy and, yes, even Honey Boo Boo. Microsoft released its data recently, which provides the top search results for several categories, including the most famous people, social media, tech terms, Olympians and more. The iPhone 5 didn’t rule each of those categories independently, but it was the most searched “news” item.
Gangnam Style Dance was the 6th most searched term, behind Honey Boo Boo, KONY 2012 followed in 7th and was trailed by those searching for news on the Academy Awards, the Kindle Fire HD and Facebook’s IPO.
Clearly the iPhone 5 was one of the most talked-about tech stories of the year, but it is a bit disheartening to hear that it was followed by more important events, such as natural disasters and the U.S. Presidential election. Perhaps, however, those weren’t searched for as often because they were covered in-depth on national TV and news stations and because both occurred more recently.
The iPhone 5 has been rumored for well over a year, so it makes sense that there were more search terms over time.
