Amazon’s recent test that offered its Prime service for $7.99 a month has already been abandoned. The company confirmed to AllThingsD on Friday that customers hoping to take advantage of the option will have to opt for the company’s current annual fee. “We’ve completed our test and are no longer signing up new customers for Amazon Prime monthly memberships,” a company spokesperson confirmed. It’s unclear whether Amazon will implement a monthly structure in the future — it’s annual lump sum of $79 is cheaper anyway — but you can imagine that the online retailer was likely using the test to gauge consumer interest. For now, services like Netflix and Hulu, which both offer $7.99 a month options, are safe from Amazon’s growing media presence.
