Nintendo’s been calling this whole thing “asymmetrical multiplayer.” That essentially implies that one person engages with the game in one way, while the other player engages with the game in an entirely different way.

The new trailer for one of the multiplayer modes in ZombiU, as seen above, does a wonderful job of showing off exactly how this mechanic could potentially work.

While one player is tasked with battling hordes of zombies on the TV in first person perspective while using the Wii Remote and Nunchuck combination, the other player uses the Wii U GamePad to strategically spawn zombies all over the map. These are two very different methods of play that occur within the same game mode. One person’s playing a horde survival game, while the other is scratching their real-time strategy itch.

What I love about all of this is that we’re only in the very early stages of game design for the Wii U. Asymmetrical multiplayer is a mechanic that’s only now being explored by developers, and I’m willing to wager that we’ll see some crazy unique stuff from publishers before the Wii U’s lifespan is up.
