Verizon Wireless admitted on Monday that there’s an issue affecting its iPhone 5 users in which the device may consume cellular data even when it’s connected to a wireless network. Thankfully, a fix is already available, so just head to Settings > General > About and apply the update. Verizon’s official statement on the matter, provided to The Loop is as follows:

Under certain circumstances, iPhone 5 may use Verizon cellular data while the phone is connected to a Wi-Fi network. Apple has a fix that is being delivered to Verizon customers right on their iPhone 5. Verizon Wireless customers will not be charged for any unwarranted cellular data usage.

Even though you may not be charged for erroneous data usage, your phone is likely consuming more juice than it needs to if it’s pinging cellular and Wi-Fi networks at the same time, so we suggest applying the update as soon as possible.
