TiVo-streaming for mobile devices has been long-(long-)awaited, and much-anticipated. And although it’s still missing as a native feature from TiVo settop boxes, there will soon be one way to get the job done if you’re an iOS user.
Last May, when TiVo unveiled its $130 Stream transcoder at the NCTA Cable Show 2012, some folks were supremely interested in getting their hands on one. Sadly, there has been no satisfaction there, as it hasn’t quite made its way into the market. But behold! — emails apparently just went out to winners of a Facebook contest, letting them know that the box is available for them to pre-order for a September 5 delivery date.
Even though the company touted its mobile-friendly features, the promotional literature thus far only specifies the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. The box will be able to stream content from TiVos to one or all of them simultaneously, as well as stream shows while they record or as the user watches another channel. It can also wirelessly download recorded content for offline or out-of-network viewing on those portables (just like TiVoToGo does for desktops).
Now for the bad news: It’s only supported on Premiere series TiVos (and it appears those have to be jacked in via Ethernet to a router). Still, a lot of people will be excited to get their hands on this — even at the $130 price point — particularly as it involves no ongoing fees. If you’re one of them, you’ll want to note that some people managed to score a pre-order even without participating in the contest, so if you’re up for giving it a go, try the listed sales line at 877-289-8486 and see if it you can snag one. Then report back here and let us know whether or not it worked for you.
