Since launching in the spring of last year, the Nintendo 3DS has enjoyed one major release from The Legend of Zelda catalogue. That game, of course, was Ocarina of Time 3D. It was a remake and remaster of what most gamers would consider one of the most important quests in the medium’s history.
Nintendo will be making another Zelda title for their newest portable, but they haven’t announced whether or not with will be an original title or a complete remake. In speaking with IGN, however, Shigeru Miyamoto has clarified that the Big N is actually standing between two choices right now for the next 3DS Zelda. They’re looking at either a Majora’s Mask remake or something from the realm of A Link to the Past.
“We haven’t quite decided yet, whether we’re going to do A Link to the Past, because there’s also the possibility of doing a remake of Majora’s Mask…This is something we’ve certainly been talking about and doing a little bit of experimenting with, to figure out which way we’re going to go…
…We have so many goals right now. We’re always looking at expanding our audience and giving people the opportunity to get their hands on 3DS and see what kind of fun gaming experiences they can have. And now, we’re also tasked with pushing the Wii U. So we have lots of good opportunities in terms of thinking about which Zelda game is going to be best for which purpose.”
The fact that Nintendo is entertaining both of these era’s in Link’s history has been rumored since the launch of Ocarina of Time 3D.
If it were up to me, we’d see either a remake of A Link to the Past or some sort of sequel. To be fair, though, I’ve openly talked about how that SNES classic is my favorite entry in the entire Zelda franchise.
