Rumors have been running rampant that Google will be marketing its own tablet this year, and now reports say it may launch as soon as next month and ship 2.5 million units before the year is out.
According to a report from DigiTimes today, Google is moving ahead with its plans to market its own 7-inch tablet this year, and we could see that happening in June. The “upstream supply chain” sources say that the plans call for an initial shipment of 600,000 units, but for a potential total of 2.5 million units before the end of the year. The tablet has reportedly been co-developed with Asustek.
All of the rumors over the past few months seem to agree on one that, and that is Google is targeting a price between $200 and $250. This would put it in direct competition with the Kindle Fire, and allow it to see well below the $399 iPad 2. Should the iPad Mini become a reality, however, then the 7-inch tablet wars could really heat up.
