To compete with devices like the iPad and Transformer Prime, Research In Motion seems to believe that all its PlayBook really needs is a little LTE love. The company promised an upgraded version of its misunderstood tablet would hit sometime this year, and an FCC filing suggests its arrival is all but imminent. We saw the device kicking around the FCC a few months back, but now RIM has reportedly received regulatory approval for what looks to be a PlayBook with built-in cellular capabilities, AllThingsD said on Friday, with many signs pointing to “several flavors of wireless connectivity, including Wi-Fi and LTE.” In addition, the filing references NFC and Bluetooth (perhaps 4.0?). Welcome features, sure, but enough to sway buyers away from the LTE-capable iPad? I don’t see that happening.
