Gmail is down for thousands, if not millions, of users and many are expressing their frustrations on Twitter. We’ve confirmed that the service is indeed down for several members of our staff, although several of us are still working along with nary an issue.
It’s a big problem for Google, especially now that thousands of enterprise firms have started to use Gmail, Google Docs and other services for business use. Google is currently competing with Microsoft in the enterprise space and a failure to guarantee uptime certainly isn’t a good option and is one of the downsides of shifting a business to a cloud-based option that an IT department can’t readily fix.
“Thanks everyone for the reports of 500 errors, we’re working on it,” Google said via Twitter. The company usually restores its service rather quickly, so hopefully we hear more soon.
UPDATE: Google said issued the following on its Service Details website: “The problem with Google Mail should be resolved. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience and continued support. Please rest assured that system reliability is a top priority at Google, and we are making continuous improvements to make our systems better.”
