Despite being a PlayStation Certified device, the Sony Xperia S launched without access to the PlayStation Store, leaving gamers who had adopted the Android-powered smartphone scratching their heads. But today the PlayStation Store has arrived, bringing with it 14 classic PS One titles.
To gain access to the store on your Xperia S — or your “Acro HD” if you’re in Japan — you first need to enable your device to install applications that weren’t obtained from the Android Market. You can do this by opening up the Settings application, then tapping on ‘Applications’ and enabling ‘Unknown sources’.
Once you’ve done that, tap on the ‘Let’s start PS Store’ application that should be located in your apps tray. This should allow you to download both the PlayStation Store and PS Pocket applications. You will, of course, need a Sony Entertainment Network (previously PlayStation Network) account to purchase PlayStation software.
You’ll find 16 PS One games in the store, however, two of them — WipEout and Cool Boarders 2 — are clearly labeled “Xperia Play-exclusive,” so you may not be able to play these. The other 14 titles are:
- Twisted Metal
- Kula World
- Jumping Flash!
- Destruction Derby
- Jet Rider
- Jet Rider 2
- Cool Boarders
- Kurushi Final
- Everybody’s Golf
- The Little Mermaid II
- Championship Bass
The Verge notes that this list is missing titles like Crash Bandicoot, which are available on other PlayStation Certified Xperia handsets. It’s unclear why there is this disparity across the Xperia, but maybe these titles will appear later on.
Have you purchased a PS One title for your Xperia S yet?
