It isn’t very often you will hear a company admit it isn’t doing well in a given market, but that is exactly what Samsung did today at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.
Speaking with reporters during a media roundtable, CNET reports that Hankil Yoon, a product strategy executive for Samsung, said ‘We’re not doing very well in the tablet market.’ This old statement comes as Samsung is preparing to launch the Galaxy Note 10.1. The company feels that the addition of the S-Pen, it’s name for the stylus that comes with the device, allows people to use tablets for a lot more creation of content as opposed to just passively consuming it, a criticism many pundits have had about the entire tablet category.
Mr. Yoon went on to add that company expects to ship 10 million units of the Galaxy Note 5.3, the phone version of the device that bridges the gap between a typical smartphone and a tablet. As of December 29 of last year, a mere month after the international launch of the Galaxy Note, Samsung said it had already shipped one million of the device, but we have not had any updates on its success since that time.
Of particular interest, Yoon was asked if there would be any potential cannibalization of sales of the Galaxy Tab line, which is also seeing updates this year, by the Galaxy Note line. Yoon replied, “The best thing to survive in the market is to kill your products, We want to stay competitive in the market.”
It looks like Samsung may be viewing itself as its own competition at this point.
