Say what you want about Nokia‘s mainstream mobile business, but at least the Finnish phone maker is still riding high in the luxury market. Not only is its Vertu division the dominant mobile tech brand among the disgustingly wealthy, but this affluence-targeting branch continues to pump out sought-after wares — like this new wallet-gouging show of excess.
Now it may look rather BlackBerryesque, but this not a device geared for mobile road warriors. While it might have mundane features like a built-in camera and Nokia’s latest OS, this handmade phone is also framed in gold, lined in diamonds, faced with a lab-grown display of sapphire crystal, and finished off with a hard QWERTY keyboard made of precious gemstones. The asking price for this haute handset? A mere $6,800.
Are you kidding? This thing doesn’t even have published specs yet — Does it have quad-cores or something? 128GB of storage? 8GB of RAM? — and it’s still on the most wanted list among the penthouse crowd. Clearly it has more to do with owning a status symbol. Or maybe it’s the heady joy of getting a year’s premium concierge service bundled with it — you know, for times when you’d rather let someone else arrange that private jet to Monte Carlo.
Or maybe it’s just that rich people are insane. I like pretty jewels as much as the next girl, but when it comes to a gadget that keeps me connected to everything in my life, I’d take an EVO 3D or iPhone any day over this.
What do you think? If you had the means, would this be your dream phone? Or are you as agog as I am over this crazy thing?
