The Last Guardian and the Team Ico Collection (including HD versions of ICO and Shadow of the Colossus) for the PS3 have been delayed to unspecified dates. The HD collection was supposed to serve as the fanfare leading up to the release of The Last Guardian, much like The God of War Collection did for God of War III. For gamers that don’t know, Team Ico has established a cult following that specifically formed around the wonderfully inventive Shadow of the Colossus.

Both titles were going to ship during the fall holiday of 2011. New dates have not been set.

Fumito Ueda offered up his apologies and an explanation to fans, as translated and reprinted on PlayStation.Blog.

I announced at last year’s Tokyo Game Show that the release timing of The Last Guardian which is currently being developed would be holiday 2011.

However, to provide more challenging and better quality of content to users and to fulfill First Party Studio’s obligations, I decided to postpone its release timing.

All the members of my production team are working together at a fast pace to develop and release the game in First Party Studio quality.

I sincerely apologize to all the customers who have been waiting for “The Last Guardian” for so long, but I beg for your patience. I will also announce the new release timing at a later time.

The Last Guardian was formally revealed at E3 in 2009. Since then, it’s been slowly trickling out in sporadic trailers and screen shots. The project, by trailers and design alone, seems to capture a very strong sense of spirit and innocence. Here’s a proof of concept: a trailer released last year.

There’s no doubt that gamers are excited about both the classic collection and new property from Team Ico. The developers have established a penchant for quality and imagination that has earned them a well deserved following.

As more information surfaces, including release dates, we’ll be on it.
