A survey sponsored by game-publisher Ubisoft priced the 3G NGP at $350 and the non-3G NGP at $250, asking participants: “How likely would you be to purchase the Sony NGP now that you know this retail price?”
News of the survey was reported to Kotaku by several readers who participated in it, but has not yet been made public.
While this survey may not have been conducted by Sony, Ubisoft is still one of the largest publishers in the gaming space. To consider these price points 100% valid would be absurd; however, given the stature of the survey sponsor, the numbers can’t be entirely dismissed either.
It’s possible that Ubisoft is gauging their interest in developing for Sony’s upcoming platform. They may, in fact, be using a legitimate price point so that they can understand the willingness of customers to purchase the system. If the survey predicts a low purchase rate given the set prices, Ubisoft may not develop as much as they would given predicted sellouts.
This could also just be a simple survey with no real information about anything. The internet is a giant rumor mill, so continue to take these things with a grain of salt.
But! If we were to play a game of hypothetical conjecture, would you be interested in the NGP at these prices. $250 seems reasonable for the handheld, regardless of 3G absense.
