About a year ago a nearly eight-minute trailer appeared online for something called Mortal Kombat: Rebirth. The idea was for the idea to become a movie, but things have taken a bit of a turn, and while the story will continue, it won’t be on the silver screen.
Starring Michael Jai White (Spawn in the live-action movie of the same name) as Jax and Jeri Ryan (Seven of Nine on Star Trek: Voyager) as Sonya Blade, The Mortal KombatL Rebirth short was supposed to serve as a relaunch of the franchise into cinemas after those hideous movies and television series of the 1990’s. This new project was supposed to portray a darker, grittier world ala what Batman Begins did for Batman films.
Not much had been heard of the project since the video first appeared online, and personally I had totally forgotten about it until this news popped up on IO9 this weekend. It seems that Warner Premiere has optioned the idea for a ten-part Web series with filming expected to start next month in Vancouver. Michael Jai White is scheduled to return as Jax, but no word on Ms. Ryan continuing with the role of Sonya Blade.
The other expected fighters we can hope to see include:
- Shang Tsung
- Liu Kang
Apparently most of the supernatural aspects are gone, although some rumors indicate that Shao Kahn and Shang Tsung will be gods from another dimensions that the fighters must ultimately defeat.
While the name “Mortal Kombat” doesn’t carry the impact it once did, this was once one of the most feared video game series around as parents groups around the United States were sure kids would rush out and try to mimic the fatality moves of the characters would use at the end of some fights. Yes, because everyone has the brute strength to tear out a spinal column with their bare hands.
Will the concept work as a Web series? It will depends on how much they allow them to get away with, but it just might.
What say you? Will you check out a Mortal Kombat Web series?
